What is a Postpartum Doula?

Common images of you cooing your baby, while rocking her in the nursery in your white nightgown.....be gone!  Our society isolates more than any other- we think we have to do it all ourselves.  And perhaps you're thinking of doing motherhood (and fatherhood!) a wee bit differently than your parents did it.  It's only natural to want to find your own way- the frustrating part comes in when your desire to find your own way meets up with well-intended helpers with unsolicited advice that don't mesh with your ideals.  Or, maybe you're willing to take all the help you can get, in any form, and it's just not coming through like you hoped.  Or maybe that support is out-of-state or limited to a short visit.  We offer support when you need it, how you need it, and in the way you choose it.

Research shows that the quality services of a postpartum doula can ease the transition that comes with the addition of a baby to a family, improve parental satisfaction and reduce the risk of mood disorders.

Our postpartum services are customized to fit your family's needs.  Services may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Complimentary consultation- either during your pregnancy, at your postpartum visit with your birth doula (for continuity of care), or postpartum (whenever you realize you're interested in our help)!
• Education, companionship, and nonjudgmental support during the fourth trimester (postpartum)
• Assistance with newborn care, family adjustment, meal preparation and light household tidying
• Evidence-based information on infant feeding, emotional and physical recovery from birth, infant soothing and coping skills for new parents and makes appropriate referrals when necessary
• Guidance through nutrition for the whole family
• Understanding of "The Baby Blues" and Postpartum Mood Disorders
• Care for your other children and assistance with sibling transition
• Nursery and household organization
• Grocery shopping and light errands
• Expertise and tips in caring for multiples and premature infants
• Accompaniment out of the house- to your health care provider or getting adjusted to the tasks of being out-and-about with Baby
• Referral to helpful resources, from health care providers to comunity events
• Encouragement and assistance with rest and sleep for the whole household
• Overnight support available

We offer Postpartum Doula Services to help support you and your baby and to encourage your confidence as a new parent.  We work to decrease stress and worry so you can enjoy your time with your new baby!  During the initial consultation or following it, if you decide that a Beautiful Birth Postpartum Doula is the best fit for you, we will set up a schedule and you specific requirements will be discussed.  Upon hire, we will ask you to complete a Service Agreement and pay a deposit to secure availability.

Hours should be scheduled in advance.  If time outside of scheduled hours are desired, your doula will provide services as available. Purchased hours to not expire but cannot be returned or cashed out.  Phone calls, e-mails, and text messages are unlimited.  There is a three hour minimum per visit.  All payments must be made at time of service (or prior to service if you have purchased a package).

A back-up doula will only be recommended in the event of your doula's emergency or illness, unless your postpartum needs require more support staff than anticipated or than the doula can accommodate.  Although we limit the number of commitments we take on when you retain our back-up services, your flexibility regarding the unpredictability of birth is appreciated if you are hiring a postpartum doula, who also works as a birth doula.

Postpartum Preparation:

A prenatal session is encouraged to develop your postpartum plan.  We will discuss ways to prevent anxiety and become prepared for your upcoming adjustment.  Topics discussed include: what to expect postpartum, needs evaluation, sibling adjustment, pet adjustment, ways to encourage a smooth transition into motherhood and community resources.
