Growing up I heard my birth story every year on my birthday. I learned birth was an experience that was empowering and was always going to be remembered.  While in nursing school, my labor and delivery clinical inspired me to begin independently studying different birthing techniques while also engaging in independent projects to research and educate expecting parents about their options. As a birth doula, I have enjoyed every miracle I have been a part of.

I enjoy educating expecting parents and working to design a birthing plan for your ideal birth. I work to decrease anxiety and promote confidence to allow you to embrace the day of your birth, rather than fear it. I will stay by your side throughout your labor and provide calm reassurance while being your advocate and your coach. As a nurse I can offer medical education and explain hospital policies. I am also able to translate medical terminology to ease the anxiety of the unknown; but as a doula, I will not offer medical advice. I focus on providing education to allow you to make fully informed decisions then support your choices though out your pregnancy. If at any point you forget, I will be the voice that reminds you "you can do it."

In addition, I enjoy helping out with infant care! My parents have been foster parents since I was in high school and I enjoy teaching the little tricks I've learned with infant care and helping parents transition with their new baby! I am on staff at the Madison Birth Center as the Quality Control Manager.  Prior to my decision to specialize in birth and study midwifery, I worked full-time at UW Hospital as an Emergency Room nurse.

What families are saying about Doula Emily Wright...

Jeannine, Justin, & Baby Lia

I am so pleased with the way everything went. To start out, the private childbirth classes Emily Wright did for us were great! We learned a lot of great information, and very importantly, my husband was happy with them! I feel like he actually got some good information from Emily W. Of course I did too! When Justin and I asked Emily W to be our Doula it was like a weight had been lifted off our shoulders. For me, I felt so much more confident having a natural unmedicated birth with Emily there for support, and for Justin, because I think he felt like he didn't know how to best support me during labor. It was one of the best decisions we made together.

The morning I woke up having contractionis I was never nervous or scared because of all of Emily's support and encouragement throughout my pregnancy letting me know I could do it. During my labor, Emily was the same way, and so helpful. Emily was there to rub my feet and help me feel more comfortable, to provide encouraging positive words, and hold my hand when I needed it. Between Emily, my midwife, Justin and my mom, we made an awesome team for Lia's birth. It was great having Emily there for the support with breastfeeding and for her to encourage the nurses to bring her over to me for skin-to-skin bonding-Thank you, thank you, for that! If I am ever blessed with more babies, Emily will definitely be hearing from Justin and me so she can share her amazing gift with our family again.

Anonymous Mom & Dad, Baby Boy

Shortly after I found out I was pregnant, I watched a documentary that really helped me to understand what midwives and doulas did and how they could help assist in labor. My whole goal was to have an “all natural” delivery, provided that there were no complications. I was able to talk with Emily Wright about what some of my goals were. Emily was a wealth of helpful information and taught me so much. Unlike so many people, Emily actually believed in me and encouraged me to try for the all- natural birth that I wanted. She met with my husband and I several weeks before the delivery and taught us techniques to help assist with a natural delivery. She was very good with my husband as well and helped show him some things he could do to help me. Had we not met with her, I wouldn’t have been as prepared as I was. She told me some of the things to expect from my body in a natural delivery, which no one else had talked to me about. The night that I went into labor, Emily was there the entire time. It was such a relief to see her at the hospital when I arrived. She immediately began to use some of the techniques to help me relax. I remember walking to my room and having to stop during a contraction. She rubbed my back and helped me get through it so I could finish the walk. I can’t say it didn’t hurt, but she made it so much easier for me to deal with the discomfort. She stayed right by my side the entire duration of my labor and delivery. I will be forever grateful for the support and encouragement that Emily provided to my husband and I the night that our son was born! I can now say I had a completely “all natural” delivery with no pain medications. Not sure I could’ve done it without her. Emily is absolutely wonderful, and I can only hope that she will still be around for any future children that we are blessed with!
