Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What's the first step if I'm thinking about becoming a doula?
A: Register for a workshop! Guarantee your spot by registering & paying tuition as directed per individual workshop
Q: How do I decide whether to become a Birth Doula or Postpartum Doula? Can I do both?
Q: What other classes will I need to take?
If time allows before your basic Birth Doula Workshop, take a Childbirth Education Class in your community. Some trainers offer a doula-specific one as a workshop add-on but it is DONA's preference that you research those available to the families you'll be supporting & attend one as an observer (and it's a great way to network with people you'll be referring to/from- childbirth educators and expectant families!). If you decide to certify as a doula, this will help fulfill those requirements as well.
Q:What books and supplies will I need?
A: Obtain The Birth Partner, Revised-5th Edition: A Complete Guide to Childbirth for Dads, Partners, Doulas, and All Other Labor Companions: Penny Simkin, 2013 & Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth: Ina May Gaskin, 2003.
Read both! If you don't access them prior to your workshop, copies may be available for purchase at the workshop & you'll need to read them to complete adequate preparation for your service as a doula.
